Buckling under constraints

  • slide

We extend our study of growing cell monolayers folding by investigating the case where cell monolayers are grown inside elastic environments. Our simulations are compared to the experiments performed by the Roux Lab, where epithelial cells are cultured inside hydrogel microcapsules. The proliferating cells cover the inner surface of the capsule, forming a spherical cell monolayer. Further cell divisions yield an eventual buckling of the tissue. We investigate how the cells and the elastic environment properties affect the folding of the simulated cell monolayers.
